Some trust in chariots and some in horses, but we trust in the name of the Lord our God. (Psalm 20:7 ESV)
Psalm 20 is a battle song. I was sung in victory. It is a prayer, as Spurgeon wrote, a prayer for King David, glorifying God. Knowing God's omnipotence, the Israelites knew a whisper could start a storm that would wipe out an enemy, wiping out men, horses, and chariots.
“We trust in the Lord our God.” In God we trust.” A phrase we should be familiar with if we are believers or not. Just look at the U.S. coins, and you will see it. However, often, our trust is misplaced. We place our trust in things that could be more trustworthy. Tangible items we trust can let us down, and people we trust can also let us down. In the right circumstances, people may turn against us. But when we contrast this with our trust in the Lord, we realize the trustworthy source of unwavering trust.
When we trust in the Lord, our trust is without chance. It is based solidly on the ever-present, always-sovereign Lord. When we have or maintain false confidence in things of the world, we always risk disappointment and harm. There is never a disappointment in the Lord, only glory and assurance.
When we boast in things of the world, we display our foolishness to those who know the Lord. When the young wealthy man asked Jesus what it took to become a follower. Jesus told him to sell everything (Matt 19, Luke 18.) Things of this world will never last, but the love of the Father is eternal. In singing or reading this psalm, we should be reminded to pray to our Father as Jesus instructed, and in doing so, trust in the Lord for the guidance in our life that gives us peace and a victory over the world.
Grace and Peace!
Amen
This is one of the most comforting verses to cling to when you are facing uncertainty or difficulty in your life. Your situation or the situation around you may be beyond your understanding, but it is not beyond God’s.God knows what is going on all the hows, whens and whys. When you do not know what to do or what will happen next, trust that He does. Follow God’s guidelines and commands knowing that as you practice obedience, He is working out the rest. “The LORD is my strength and my shield; my heart trusts in Him, and He helps me. My heart leaps for joy, and with my song I praise Him. (Psalm 28:7
