Teachers of God’s Word often use the word “divine” to describe the character and attributes of the Lord Jesus Christ.  Others use it informally as a way of lavishing someone or something with a lofty compliment.  For example:

  • “His piano skills are absolutely divine.”

  • “Leonardo Da Vinci’s depiction of ‘The Last Supper’ is divine.”

  • “Her gold-medal performance on the balance beam was divine.”

  • “This chocolate mousse is divine!”

You get my point.  Words mean everything; therefore, we should use them responsibly.  I personally believe the word “divine” should only be used when referencing the Lord and for no other purposes.  Why am I being so dogmatic, you may ask?  Allow me to explain.

Merriam-Webster’s Dictionary has three entries for the definition of divine, and the very first entry reads:  “of, relating to, or proceeding from God.”  I do not know if the researchers at Merriam-Webster are Believers, but this definition falls perfectly in line with how the Lord is described in the Scriptures.  I’m certainly not equating the dictionary with the inerrancy of the Word of God, but the folks at Merriam got this one right.  The Bible is the purest and holiest Book anyone can read to learn of the divinity and deity of the Lord.  As 2 Timothy 3:16-17 (ESV) tells us:  All Scripture is inspired by God and is beneficial for teaching, for rebuke, for correction, for training in righteousness; so that the man of God may be fully capable, equipped for every good work.

There are many Scriptural references which make it crystal clear that the Lord alone is divine.  Here are just a few:

The Lord Jesus Christ is God Incarnate (in the flesh; in human form).

·       Christ’ virgin birth is foretold by the Prophet Isaiah (Isaiah 7:14) and in the Apostle Matthew’s account (Matthew 1:23).

·       The Word of God literally became a living representative of God (John 1:14; Colossians 2:9-10).

The Lord Jesus Christ is Eternal (to last or exist forever; without end or beginning).

·       The Word of God was with God in the very beginning (John 1:1-3).

·       The Messiah existed long before the creation of mankind (John 8:58; Micah 5:2).

The Lord Jesus is Omnipotent (has unlimited power; able to do anything)

·       Christ alone is King of Kings, Lord of Lords, the Beginning and the End (1 Timothy 6:13-16; Revelation 1:8; 21:6; 22:13).

The Lord Jesus is Omniscient (knows everything)

·       Nothing in creation is hidden from His sight (Hebrews 4:13).

·       Christ knows us better than we know ourselves (1John 3:18-20).

The Lord Jesus is Omnipresent (present everywhere at the same time)

·       The Lord is literally everywhere, both in Heaven and on Earth (Jeremiah 23:23-24).

·       Absolutely nothing is hidden from the Lord’s sight (Hebrews 4:13).

There were (and may be today) so-called religious leaders who claimed to be divine.  However, none of them were able to fulfill the Biblical standards set forth by the Lord.  There are over 300 messianic prophecies in the Old Testament, and the Lord Jesus Christ fulfilled them all. The most important of these prophecies, however, is the resurrection.  The Lord Jesus Christ was both fully man and fully God.  He never sinned, yet He went to the cross at Calvary and died for our sins, taking on the punishment that we deserve. He was resurrected from the dead three days later, overcoming the power of sin and spiritual death, which is eternal separation from God.  By God’s grace through faith in the finished works of Christ, believers are no longer enemies of God, but are now considered children of God.  For those who repent their sins, confess Christ as their Savior, and put their trust in Him, He will do more than forgive them for the sins they’ve committed.  He promises to never leave you nor forsake you.  He will prepare a place in Heaven for you.  He will place His Holy Spirit in you as a guarantee of your salvation.  He will speak to you through His Word.  He will give you rest.  He will give you a peace which surpasses all understanding.  That, my Friends, is the perfect demonstration of divinity.  Therefore, the definition of divinity can be summed up in one Word – Jesus.

God bless.
