The Word

“How can you say, ‘We are wise, and the law of the LORD is with us’? But behold,

the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie. The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken; behold, they have rejected the word of the LORD, so what wisdom is in them?” (Jeremiah 8:8-9 ESV)

If you really want to understand Jesus, you must seek Him in the Old Testament. The prophets are a great place to start. The Lord is speaking through Jeremiah to Israel. Lord is speaking to the Israel between the years of 650 BC and 570 BC.

While Jeremiah directed these words to Israel between those times, he is also prophesying about Christ. “We are wise, and the law of the Lord is with us.” The Pharisees would speak similar words as they confronted Jesus. They were the law, the “learned,” and held positions of power, yet they were blind to God.

But behold, the lying pen of the scribes has made it into a lie. The Scribes and Pharisees twisted scripture to suit their needs. “The wise men shall be put to shame; they shall be dismayed and taken. Jesus challenged the Pharisees and shamed them privately and publicly for their behavior. The Pharisees were “dismayed” and disgusted with Jesus and how He met with, ate with, and befriended the sinner, the lonely, and the sick.

“They have rejected the word of the Lord, so what wisdom is in them?” Jesus is the Word of God. The Pharisees rejected that Word. They plotted against the Word of the Lord under the guise of protecting Israel when they were actually perverted and were protecting their positions and wealth. Before them stood the long-sought Messiah, ready to save the world, including Israel and the Pharisees, yet they were ignorant of His identity. Jesus told them directly who he was, and they murdered Him because of who He claimed to be and who He truly was.

Many are blind today; they still fail to see the Christ. They turn their backs and murder Him with words. Spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Spread His word and help bring the lost sheep back to the shepherd.
