The Stone Cutter

"As you come to him, a living stone rejected by men but in the sight of God chosen and precious, you yourselves like living stones are being built up as a spiritual house, to be a holy priesthood, to offer spiritual sacrifices acceptable to God through Jesus Christ. For it stands in Scripture: “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a cornerstone chosen and precious, and whoever believes in him will not be put to shame.”

The Stone That Saves

Jesus was a living stone. He is the cornerstone of Christianity, the church, and salvation. Jesus was the stone that was rejected by the world at the time of His ministry. They failed to see who He was and why He was there.

We, too, are living stones. Without Christ, we are rough, jagged stones that will not fit in the Kingdom of God. Throughout the Bible, there is Scripture that speaks of stone masons: Masons who built the temple and the palace of Solomon. The Holy Spirit is a stone mason. Ezekiel wrote, “And I will give you a new heart, and a new spirit I will put within you. And I will remove the heart of stone from your flesh and give you a heart of flesh. (Ezekiel 36:26 ESV) The Spirit transforms the stone into flesh like a mason transforms stone into an object of beauty. When we accept Christ as our savior and begin to walk with Jesus, the Holy Spirit begins to shape us. Through the Spirit’s conviction of our sins, our edification in Scripture, He hones us.

A River Runs Through Us

I also like to picture the Spirit as a river that, like a mason, smooths the rough edges of a stone. The Spirit flows through us like a river helping to smooth out our rough edges as we grow in sanctification. As we become more holy each day, the Spirit, like water, constantly hones us to a clean shine. This shine is the reflection of Christ in our daily life. A glow that draws people, not repels them.

Become A Shining Light

No one wants to handle rough and jagged things; they can injure you. Rough and jagged people who do not know Christ can only draw one to darkness. In John’s Gospel 1:4-5, John wrote, “In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.” When you are saved in Christ and grow in sanctification, you become that light of Christ, and that light emanating from you will draw others to Christ.
