But you must remember, beloved, the predictions of the apostles of our Lord Jesus Christ. 18 They said to you, “In the last time, there will be scoffers, following their own ungodly passions.” 19 It is these who cause divisions, worldly people, devoid of the Spirit. 20 But you, beloved, building yourselves up in your most holy faith and praying in the Holy Spirit, 21 keep yourselves in the love of God, waiting for the mercy of our Lord Jesus Christ that leads to eternal life. 22 And have mercy on those who doubt;” (Jude 17-22 ESV)

Jude's writing begins with a reference to “the last time,” Which signifies the incarnation of Christ and the start of the last days. In this context, Jude reminds us of the prophecies put forward by the apostles and our Lord Jesus Christ.  We are not alone in our faith, as there are scoffers who mock and chide us. These scoffers often display anger and violence, contrasting sharply with our peaceful and steadfast belief.

Looking around, we can see the 'worldly people,' who are no different from those 2000 years ago. They are 'devoid of Spirit,' lacking spiritual understanding and connection. It's important to remember that not everyone receives salvation, and understanding the gospel requires God's enablement. False teachers, many of whom we encounter today, are devoid of faith. Their actions often reveal their bondage to sin. They are not the true believers they pretend to be.

We, however, are in Christ. Jude speaks of building yourselves up in holy faith. This is our stay on the path of Christ, our sanctifying growth, where we build up our faith. We gain confidence in the Lord. We grow in our interaction with each other. Our fellowship strengthens us and our assurances. It is a building up of our faith that truly enriches us and helps us as we pray for each other. There is indeed strength in numbers. The perfect sentiment for a spiritual war, a war of minds, good and evil. This is our source of strength and hope.

Have mercy on those who are not believers. God may open the door for them, and you may be given God’s words that enable them to see and hear the gospel for the first time. If this happens, they and you will be forever changed by the Spirit.

Walk with Christ and with each other. Nothing is more satisfying than lunch with fellow believers to discuss our faith, experiences, scripture, and the Lord. May the Holy Spirit guide us all in our holy faith and pray for us in our sins.

Grace and Peace!
