“Walk in wisdom toward outsiders, making the best use of the time. Let your speech always be gracious, seasoned with salt, so that you may know how you ought to answer each person.” (Colossians 4:56 ESV)
Paul warned the church of Colossae in Phrygia about the manner in which they spoke to others. Paul knew, as should we, the significance of our influence as Christians on others. I struggle with this because of a long career in law enforcement. My words can be interpreted harshly or with an overly authoritative tone, which, as an evangelist, is not helpful in my efforts.
In the society we live in, Christians are under a microscope. The world looks for any excuse to call us racists, bigots, zealots, and so on. We cannot afford to give anyone ammunition to increase the persecution already against us.
Paul was making the point in Colossians that we should be mindful and tell our faith wisely and persuasively to others. Paul also recalls Jesus’ words about being salt and light. Salt was and is used as a preservative of meat. It keeps the meat pure and unspoiled. The Christian life is the same. It must be kept pure. When it is not, the hypocrite label is thrown around about all Christians. We must spread purity, not spiritual, ethical, or relational corruption, to uphold our responsibility and accountability as Christians.
Jesus also spoke of this in Matthew12:36-37 ESV when He warned us that we will stand before God and account for our words. Those who teach the Word of God are also held to a higher standard. Jesus said, “I tell you, on the day of judgment people will give account for every careless word they speak, for by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.”
Take care of how you speak. Teach with love and grace. Do not allow Satan to stoke anger in your heart when you are confronted about your faith. Remember, non-believers reject not you but Christ, and we know how that works out if their hearts are not changed.
Spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, the good news of his penal substitution and atoning death, with a heart full of joy and enthusiasm. Let your fulfillment in Christ be the shining beacon to others, igniting a spark of inspiration and motivation in their hearts.
Peace and Grace!
