Mina for you, Mina you

“Come, let us return to the Lord; for he has torn us, that he may heal us; he has struck us down, and he will bind us up. After two days he will revive us; on the third day, he will raise us up, that we may live before him. Let us know; let us press on to know the Lord; his going out is sure as the dawn; he will come to us as the showers, as the spring rains that water the earth.” Hosea 6:1-3 ESV.

Besides the obvious allusion to the cross and the prophecy of the Christ, Hosea 6 also warns us to make sure we truly understand who our God is and the necessity for true obedience. Jesus told the story of the 10 minas (coins). If we look at this parable in Luke, it is also a warning about the dangers of not truly knowing our creator. The servant who hid the minas, fearing his master misjudged that master, who did not punish but rewarded the servants who served him well.

Jesus is the master in the 10 minas. He is not evil, but generous. He is giving and encouraging his servants, rewarding those who use their gifts properly to serve the kingdom of God. Picture the gospel of Jesus Christ as the minas. When we spread the gospel, we are increasing the kingdom and church of God as the servants increased the master's Mina by investing. If we hide away the gospel out of fear, or lack of trust in the Lord, we are like the servant who hid the minas, wrongfully fearing his master. Therefore, when we spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ, we will be blessed even more, as were the servants who handled well the minas of the master. The servants who handle the gospel well will be charged with greater things.

The Jewish leaders failed to understand Jesus. With all their devotion to reading the scriptures, they failed to see the promised Messiah who stood before them. We are all servants of God. He has given us the power and ability to spread the Gospel. We do it not for ourselves but for God.
