Like Paul and Silas

“And you became imitators of us and of the Lord, for you received the word in much affliction, with the joy of the Holy Spirit, so that you became an example to all the believers in Macedonia and in Achaia. For not only has the word of the Lord sounded forth from you in Macedonia and Achaia, but your faith in God has gone forth everywhere, so that we need not say anything.”(1 Thessalonians 1:6-8 ESV)

When we are deep in the service of the Lord, we suffer. There are great moments when we witness the Lord’s work through us, but more often than not, we suffer. Many say that the closer you are to Jesus, the harder Satan pulls to take you away. I believe this is true.

Here, Paul is telling us several things. First, as imitators of Paul, Silas, and our Lord, those from ancient Thessalonica suffered because they testified to the Gospel of Jesus. Paul and Silas suffered much because they preached the Gospel; it was no different for the Thessalonians or us. Paul does, however, talk of experiencing the joy of the Holy Spirit and that through our suffering, we are examples for others. There is no greater joy than to watch the Holy Spirit work in your presence. It makes many run to service. Our unfailing dedication to the Lord, our love, our works of faith, when we display these things, we are a witness to Christ.

Be like the Thessalonians; spread the Gospel to the point that God uses you so much you need not tell anyone of your work; they will already know it.

Give me the ears to hear your call, the grace to follow your desire, the strength to withstand the enemy, and the ability to see all things for what they are in your eyes. Lord, you asked who will go for us; like Isaiah, I say, "Here am I, send me". Father, bless our church, bless our ministries, bless our families, and protect your servants.
