“And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together.” (Colossians 1:17 ESV)
God holds all things together, yes, He does. All through Scripture, we see providence at work. Though men and women schemed, God’s plans go on as he intended. We see the many attempts of the enemy to stop God’s plan of salvation through Christ and within the line of David.
The first example of the enemy's attempt to stop the lineage of Christ was in Genesis. The enemy used Cain for his evil works: “And when they were in the field, Cain rose up against his brother Abel and killed him. Then the Lord said to Cain, “Where is Abel your brother?” He said, “I do not know; am I my brother's keeper?” And the Lord said, “What have you done? The voice of your brother's blood is crying to me from the ground. (Genesis 4:8-10) However, after the fall, God blessed Adam and Eve with Seth, who would carry on Adam's line.
Throughout the Old Testament, we see repeated attempts to end the Davidic line. From the offspring of King Ahab and Jezebel, both evil, to the Attempts during the deportation to Babylon, and King Saul's attempts to kill David. Probably the most horrific was the murder of the infant boys in Bethlehem, where Satan used King Herod to try to eliminate Christ. You can study these attempts in 2 Kings 11:1-4, 1 Chronicles 3:18, and in the New Testament in Matthew 1:12-13.
I am sure that Satan and his demonic minions reveled at the cross. Satan knew Jesus was human in the incarnation. Perhaps he thought it would be easy to kill Jesus. He must have laughed with delight, thinking that he had won, killing the Christ. Yet in God’s providence, the world and its demons, the pit and Satan, shook with fear on that third day when Christ emerged from the tomb, defeating sin and death in one fell swoop. Praise God! Our Savior Lives.
God’s plans are never defeated, and He has a plan for you. Despite our sickness of sin, God loves His chosen. He has seen every step you have taken and used your failures to mold you further into His image. Has He called you and you ignored Him? Is your heart yearning for the love and satisfaction that only Christ can provide?
Salvation can only be given to you by grace through faith in Jesus Christ as the risen Son of God. God knows every human heart; your salvation cannot be earned, bought, or faked; it is a gift by grace through faith in Jesus Christ. Seek Jesus today; all-powerful, no one can stop the providence of God, no one can deny His glory, and you will never be alone again. Christ lives in us who believe.
Grace and Peace!
