“Behold, upon the mountains, the feet of him who brings good news, who publishes peace!”
(Nahum 1:15 ESV)
Jesus is in every book of the Bible. I have said this many times and recommend seeking Him in every book. Here, Christ is openly found in the Book of Nahum. Nahum was a prophet whom God gave an oracle against the sin of Nineveh.
Christ is found in this book from beginning to end. In our text today, we immediately read the proclamation of the Gospel. Be hold on the mountain the feet of him who brings good news. This is a foreshadowing of Christ. The Greek word for Gospel is Evangelium (Eὐαγγέλιον); it literally means “Good News.” So, if we translate this verse into Greek, God is literally telling us, “The feet of Him who brings the Gospel.” There is Christ. Nahum tells us further that he “who publishes peace” is the one who brings the Gospel. Christ gave us His peace, and His peace is upon us.
When we read Nahum, we read the proclamation of the goodness of God—the dispensing of God’s grace. Even though Nahum does not specifically call for repentance, his oracle is a means of calling out sin and, through God’s proclamation, allows the hearer to receive grace. In doing so, God opens the door to the oracle of the Gospel spoken through Nahum.
The last link to Christ is the acknowledgment that God will deal with evil. By the coming of the one who brings good news, evil will be dealt with by God. It is these assurances we received through Christ. We can wait patiently knowing all the while, Christ will come again.
In Nahum, the prophecy of Christ’s coming exists. This prophecy was fulfilled. In the later 600s BC, Nahum prophesied to Nineveh. The people patiently waited for the Messiah. This prophecy was fulfilled. Christ told of His second coming and gave an oracle to John (Revelation). We, too, can have assurances in this oracle. God always does what He says.
Seek Christ in the Old Testament; I promise this will change your view of the early writings, and in these writings, you will find the highway that is Christ.
Peace and Grace!
