“Take your son, your only son Isaac, whom you love, and go to the land of Moriah, and offer him there as a burnt offering on one of the mountains of which I shall tell you.” (Genesis 22:2 ESV).

These words were spoken to Abraham by God, “Your only son whom you love.” Sounds familiar, right?

Abraham had faith in God and took Isaac to the top of Moriah. Abraham was prepared to sacrifice his son. Abraham, with a healthy fear of God, went with Isaac as God instructed. Before Abraham could sacrifice, Isaac and an angel of God stopped him. God had sent a replacement for Isaac, a perfect ram. Here is the cross in the story of Abraham. Abraham called that place “the Lord will provide.”

God did provide; He provided the perfect sacrifice, the Lamb of God, His only son whom He loved. As with Abraham, the Lord provided our replacement. He offered Christ, who sacrificed Himself as a propitiation for our sins. Just like the ram and Isaac, Christ is our replacement, and He shed His atoning blood for you. Jesus broke the sacrificial system, providing salvation for all who place their faith in Him, repenting their sins.

If you want to know Jesus better, know Him through the writings of the Old Testament. He’s there; you only need to look for Him. God already had His plan of redemption before time, and He revealed it to Abraham on Moriah, and as Moses wrote Genesis, He revealed it to all of us.
