“He Committed No Sin”

“He committed no sin, neither was deceit found in his mouth.” (1 Peter 2:22 ESV)

The perfection of Christ is a deep and necessary understanding for the Christian and for those seeking Him. One question I often hear is, “How could one man pay for the world's sin in only a few hours on a cross?” The answer is that Christ, the Son of God, is sinless perfection. He alone is worth more than all of creation by leaps and bounds. Peter tells us of the simplicity of this statement. In His thirty-odd years living in creation, He never sinned despite temptations, and deceit was never found in His mouth; He never lied.

How wonderful and yet challenging is this thought. For many it is outrageous that a God could, and would, die for those who worship Him. Even the apostles thought it was over that Saturday after the crucifixion as Christ lay in the earth.

Some find confusion in this fact, and are often challenged by Paul’s writing in 2 Corinthians 5:21 where he writes, “For our sake he made him to be sin who knew no sin, so that in him we might become the righteousness of God.” He became sin does not mean that He sinned but that He carried and paid for our sins. His perfect nature allowed Him to willingly impute His righteousness to us in exchange for our faith in Him bearing our sins on the cross—the death of the one for the sins of the many.

The writer of Hebrews said, “He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high”(1:3). This verse really tells us how He remained sinless. “The exact imprint of his nature” tells us that He is the glory of God, He is God, and He was God in the incarnation, veiled in flesh. In His resurrection and ascension, He sits as God at the right hand of the Father.

We as humans are due to perish. We are unable to stop sinning; therefore, we cannot be in a relationship with God. We have no self-control, and without Christ’s intervention on the cross, we would perish in the pit of hell. So, as the writer of Hebrews also tells us, “For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.” (10:14) Without the cross, there is no salvation. Without the cross, none would be sanctified. Had he been born of human DNA, He would not have been able to pay for our sins. God’s plan of redemption was perfect. The propitiation for our sin was performed in the perfection of Christ—the lamb without blemish, sinless, obedient, and at an inconceivable cost.

Yes, it is outrageous that a God would willingly die for His creation. It is also outrageous: the cost of our salvation is the very life of God. You and I were purchased, and as such, we are to be devoted in all things. We in this life will sin; we will stray as we walk the narrow path to Christ. We cannot be perfect, but have hope and faith, my friend, because Christ was and is perfect for you.
