For Him Alone

“Beware of practicing your righteousness before other people in order to be seen by them, for then you will have no reward from your Father who is in heaven.” (Matthew 6:1 ESV)

Everyone has an ego, some more than others. We all like to be acknowledged for the good things we do in our lives, especially for others. Jesus us tells us just the opposite. We should practice our righteousness in private. God sees our works, and that is all that is needed. Boasting about our works not only looks bad but sounds precisely what it is, self-righteous.

It is a fine line to walk when our works in the name of Christ are substantial. We must give credit to the Lord as it is His calling, grace, and strength that allows us to do His work. I never take credit for anything sermon, study, or post I write, for it is not I that write or speak to them but the Spirit that inspires me to do so. Half of what I plan is often never used anyway because the Spirit inspires.

It is hard to understand the influence of the Spirit, but it is true and real. Brother Jimmy can testify to the inspiration of the Spirit and how He guides our words. Jesus told us, “When they deliver you over, do not be anxious how you are to speak or what you are to say, for what you are to say will be given to you in that hour.” (Matt 10:19). Jesus was talking of the Advocate or Holy Spirit; the Spirit of God who lives inside us when Christ saves us.

Do your works, whatever and however much you can, in the Lord’s name. Give of your time, skill, love, and tithes, but do it in secret, and God will bless you for your dedication. Your treasure awaits you in heaven.
