"Fearfully and Wonderfully Made"

“I praise you, for I am fearfully and wonderfully made. Wonderful are your works; my soul knows it very well.” (Psalm 139:14 ESV)

O my Lord, how great your majesty. When you read David’s writings in Psalm 139, you should feel humbled. We forget how small we really are as humans. We are a finite part in God’s massive creation. As far as the universe stretches, it belongs to God.

With advances in science and discovery in galaxies and universes, we are beholding the breadth of God’s creation. He did not just make the earth and the Milky Way galaxy, and then everything else produced itself. All of creation spans the heavens. “And God made the two great lights—the greater light to rule the day and the lesser light to rule the night—and the stars.” (Genesis1:16 ESV)

What David wrote is exactly what we should feel: wonderfully made yet fearfully in awe of the God who made us. Kind as He is, God made us in His image. "So God created man in his own image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them." (Genesis 1:27). He did this not out of ego, but to create His adopted children who looked as He did. Perhaps it was so that we, who are believers, would be comfortable in His presence.

It is hard for the mind to conceive that God knew us before creation. The infinite mind and creativity of God are inconceivable. The preceding verse of today’s verse (v. 13) says, “For you formed my inward parts; you knitted me together in my mother's womb.” He literally knit together our DNA so as not to have an army of clones, but a church of individual children of God all to worship and praise His glory.

And God was not alone in His endeavors, for we know He exists with the Son and the Holy Spirit—all who took part in the making of creation. And we know this from Genesis, “The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (1:2) Our Savior Christ Jesus, through whom all things were made, was at the Father’s right hand. "In the beginning was the Word, and the Word was with God, and the Word was God. He was in the beginning with God. All things were made through him, and without him was not any thing made that was made. In him was life, and the life was the light of men. The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it. ..."(John 1:5)

We are a proud image of glory, designed to worship and glorify the one living God who created us. God was happy with His creation. His abstract design was completely planned and designed to perfection. I know abstract and planned are opposites. What I mean is His purpose was abstract by way of creation Ex Nihilo, from nothing, as nothing existed before creation, and yet a creation with complex purpose and design. Amazingly, God did all this in six days, not seven. “And on the seventh day God finished his work that he had done, and he rested on the seventh day from all his work that he had done.” (Genesis 2:2)

You, my friend, are not an accident. You were created with a purpose, even though at this very second you may be questioning what purpose you have. You were created unique in every way; even identical twins, who in appearance are the same, will have a different purpose under the almighty auspices and aegis of God.

So, I ask, do you know your creator? Do you know Him as your Savior? Christ was born in the flesh to sacrifice His life on the cross, bearing your sins as punishment for your nature, rising again on the third day, defeating sin and death. Do you know Christ Jesus, not as a prophet, not as a good man, but as the risen Son of God? Have you asked Him for grace, mercy, and the gift of salvation through that very grace and faith in Him alone?

God designed you to glorify and worship Him for eternity. Seek Christ now, for only God knows how long we will last in His creation.
