One Saved + ÷ = x

35 For I have come to set a man against his father, and a daughter against her mother, and a daughter-in-law against her mother-in-law. 36 And a person's enemies will be those of his own household. 37 Whoever loves father or mother more than me is not worthy of me, and whoever loves son or daughter more than me is not worthy of me. 38 And whoever does not take his cross and follow me is not worthy of me.” (Matthew 10:35-38 ESV)

Jesus is not the pacifistic, long-haired shampoo, model-looking man portrayed in early European paintings. By Christ’s own words, He came to divide and divide, and He did and continues to do. Christ was Middle Eastern, and his looks undoubtedly reflected His earthly heritage. I am not alone in these ideas. Christ’s words in Matthew tell us this is true regarding coming to divide.

Division is not something we have to do. It occurs naturally, and it does not take long. This may have happened to you. When people find out you are a Christian, especially if they knew you before you found Christ, they will begin to treat you differently. They may distance themselves from you, or they may reject you altogether. Even though they are not Christians, some will treat you the same as long as you treat them as Christ did others. However, a division will occur. Often, we separate ourselves from others by choice. They may be someone who is so deep in the world that we become uncomfortable in their company.

As Christ told us, division will happen in families, especially families with issues rooted in sin. As Christians, we are often placed in precarious situations that require constant prayer and guidance from the Lord on how to proceed. Frequently, a spouse's family is at the heart of the separation. As the other half of the relationship, we must treat the situation respectfully, only offering thoughts when asked and not forcing beliefs upon others yet explaining the scriptural view of the situation. We must not compromise our faith. This is a balancing act worthy of any Olympic challenge.

One thing that is not often discussed is the influence you may have amidst division. Sometimes, through the conflict, God opens the door to the gospel. Out of the division, some may find Christ and be spiritually reborn. One should look for this and welcome a new brother or sister (literally) in Christ.

Hot or cold? In all things related to Christ, we should be either hot or cold, never, as Jesus told us, be lukewarm. (Rev 3:15-17) Preferably, we are on fire for Christ, but as we mature, we should be hot and centered on Christ. In division, we must be a Christ-like example so the life devoted to Christ, and the Christian response to division can be seen by all.

Do not become upset, doubtful, or angry when division occurs; it is natural. Reflect on Matthew 10 and the many scriptures of the New Testament where Christ tells us to expect division and persecution. When it happens, just pick up your cross and keep walking, all the while professing the gospel and witnessing your salvation through your faith in Jesus. That is why you are here.

Grace and Peace!

Jesus does everything excellently! His work is not shoddy, haphazard, pointless, or aimless. He is the Master and delivers work that only a true master can. He saves your soul from sin, heals your body from disease, delivers you from evil and addictions, restores, refreshes, and revives. He lifts you up, establishes your stance, designs your destiny, and orders your steps. You are His workmanship, and He does everything excellently.

Mark 7:37

And they were overwhelmingly astonished, saying, He has done everything excellently (commendably and nobly)! He even makes the deaf to hear and the dumb to speak!
