Ancient Times

“But you, O Bethlehem Ephrathah, who are too little to be among the clans of Judah, from you shall come forth for me one who is to be ruler in Israel, whose coming forth is from of old, from ancient days.” (Micha 5:2 ESV)

I always touch on messianic prophecies, and my thoughts today drew me to our run-up to Thanksgiving and soon after Christmas. The prophet Micah came to mind, and I love messianic prophecies.

Here, Micah is prophesying the birth of Christ. Many miss Micah, who tells us that Christ is coming forth from old and ancient days. Micah’s prophecy is one of pre-existence. We know from John 1:1-3 that Jesus, the Word of God, was with God in the beginning. Remember what the beginning is: it is our creation. God has no beginning and no end; He is eternal.

Given that our God is three in being and one in person, Christ has no beginning or end. So, Christ came to the world from old and ancient days. It is why the incarnation and virgin birth are so important. It initiated God’s plan of salvation on earth.

In John 1, he tells us of this fulfillment. Christ told us of its fulfillment in John 17:5, saying, “And now, Father, glorify me in your own presence with the glory that I had with you before the world existed. ” Paul also told us of this fulfillment in Colossians 1:17, where he said, "And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together." 

As we approach Thanksgiving, let us remember the love of God, the sacrifice of Christ, and the indwelling of the Spirit. If you are like me, the hectic nature of the holiday has started. My friends, slow down. Take a breath and remember the things for which we are truly thankful. We are thankful that God elected us, and we have been saved through grace and faith in Christ.
