The next day, he saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Behold, the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! (John 1:29 ESV)
Matthew’s Gospel begins with a condensed record of 2000 years of Bible history. Matthew’s breaking down of the genealogies into fourteen-year segments is essential. Sinclair points out that one crucial fact is that “14 is the number of King David.” “In Roman numerals, D-V-D is 4+6+4=14.” Matthew ensures we understand it, which is vital because he clarifies the separation in his Gospel.
Matthew’s genealogy clarifies that our focus is on Jesus; He is the Messiah and royalty, having descended from King David. Sinclair points out that this genealogy moves forward from Abraham, not in reverse from Jesus. Matthew makes the point that all the issues of past kings, the failures of the Israelites, and the disregard for the prophets are now about to change. The sacrificial system is about to be permanently destroyed and replaced by the perfect sacrifice, the lamb of God, who will take away the sins of the world.
God’s sovereignty and faithfulness are proven. God’s promise to Abraham of his seed has been completed. God’s plan of redemption is in its final time.
Peace and Grace!
