“Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high, having become as much superior to angels as the name he has inherited is more excellent than theirs.” (Hebrews 1:1-4)

On this first day of Advent, we read the opening verses of the Book of Hebrews. In these opening chapters, the writer reminds us of the majesty of Jesus Christ and the reason we celebrate Advent. God spoke creation into being through His Son, Christ Jesus. We celebrate the incarnation of Christ through the virgin birth. Both of these doctrines are critical to our faith and beliefs.

Initially, God communicated with humanity in a literal manner and through the prophets. The writer of Hebrews reminds us that God, in the incarnation, walked in the very creation He created, residing, eating, drinking, and preaching directly to humanity. Jesus is God and was born unto us to complete God’s great plan of redemption for humanity. The agreed-upon plan of the Trinity that would redeem humanity, giving it the opportunity to once again share in a living relationship with God.

In the garden, God walked and talked with Adam. With the fall of man, sin entered the world, separating God from mankind. As we begin this Advent, let us remember that the child born in Bethlehem, prophesied by Isaiah, was born with one purpose: to sacrifice His life and be resurrected, defeating sin and death. A propitiation satisfying God’s wrath against the sin of mankind and opening the door to salvation.

Advent Prayer December 1, 2025

Heavenly Father,

Remind us each day of this Advent of the true meaning of Christmas.

Help us to keep our Lord Jesus in the forefront of our lives, not only

this Advent season, but every day of the year.

In His death, we have died, and in His resurrection,

we, too, are resurrected into eternal life.

Blessed be the Lord our God,

In Jesus' name we pray, Amen.
