For Advent, I will be re-posting a variation of devotions based on Sinclair Ferguson's writings. His book, “The Dawn of Redeeming Grace,” is a beautiful Advent devotional, and I highly recommend it to you, our brothers and sisters.
“In the beginning, God created the heavens and the earth. The earth was without form and void, and darkness was over the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters.” (Genesis 1 ESV)
The opening words of God can have such an impact on humankind. As Sinclair points out, you will love or immediately hate it and what it stands for. Some find the genealogies in the New Testament very confusing, dull, or useless. Matthew opens with a genealogy; some get lost right there, put down the Bible, and leave it. I often hear, “What the genealogies are all about?” The biblical genealogies of Christ are to show the Christophany, the first appearance of Christ in the Bible in Genesis 3:15, and the promise of His coming have come to fruition through the offspring of the woman. As Sinclair put it, “It is about the coming of the second genesis,” the second Adam…Christ.
"I will put enmity between you and the woman, and between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head, and you shall bruise his heel.” (Genesis 3:15 ESV)
Matthews Gospel ushers in a new start for anyone who needs to start over. If you need to start over as the end of the year approaches, choose to start over in Christ. If you do not know Him, seek Him now as the time of His birth approaches. All things are possible through Him.
Please stay with us through this Advent season as we begin a journey that leads to the birth of our Savior, our Creator, and our Lord and King.
Thank you, Sinclair.
Peace and Grace
