“For I know my transgressions, and my sin is ever before me. Against you, you only, have I sinned and done what is evil in your sight, so that you may be justified in your words and blameless in your judgment.” (Psalm 51:3-4 ESV)

We should all take a lesson from David in recognizing our sins. David makes a very real point when he writes, “My sin is ever before me.” I am sure we have all experienced the videotape in the head. A replay of a good or bad thing that has occurred in our lives. Sometimes it can be very vivid.  David writes that he cannot escape the evil he has committed. He sees it; it never leaves.

For many, this is a sin, adultery, or some other sexual sin that still draws them in. We should view our videotapes as a warning. Something that reminds us not of the temporary pleasure of sin but the rebellion against God’s will that it represents.

While our sin may be against another person, it is primarily against God. David recognizes this in this passage. He remembers that the evil that we do is done in the sight of God, who is omnipresent; God is everywhere. David also recognizes that the result of our sin, our punishment from God, is justified; we have sinned against an all-holy God. That little white lie is so offensive to God it could justify our destruction.

We live in a society that denies sin. Sin doesn’t exist because God does not exist. The denial of God by a society is an indication it has been turned over to its sin. It has happened before; just look at Rome.

We must see our sin, like David, for what it truly is: an offense towards God. We must repent for our sins, but this is not just about us. We have been commanded to spread the Gospel of Jesus Christ. In doing so, we help others recognize the seriousness of their sin and the saving grace of Jesus Christ.

Many say I wish I could make the reminders stop. I never want them to stop. They remind me of my disobedience and drive me never to commit my sin again. When the video starts in your head, watch it. Then, remind yourself of the evil it represents and weep. Repent for your sins and ask God to strengthen you and help you walk in the path of His righteousness.

Peace and Grace!
